Chemical Cleaning of vessels , pipe lines etc.

07/06/2008 2:14 AM

I need to study various processes used for cleaning of machinery and equipment process equipment, vessles/kettles,pipelines. old castings etc. However ,I am just a little aware of a few methods such as foam & soak, hydrojet, abrasive blasting etc that are used, but not much.

I would also like to know about various standards that apply for catying our cleaning mainly in Oil & Gas, Petrcochemical sector.

Any information on th above would be appreciated.

Is there any list mentioning cleaning application wise , methods to be used and the standards to be followed ?

You have to be very carefull about cleaning equipment at petrochemical plants. If proper care is not taken then it can lead to serious accidents.

Check out Zyme-flow. Successfully used in oil refineries.

Hello SUSUI!

My suggestion for alkaline cleaning is to contact www.pqcorp.com, and you find some of the best products for cleaning pipes, vessels, and other equipment when high pH need to be used. For acid cleaning you can go to www.dupont.com and find the section corresponding to what you need. Let me know if you are successful. All the best, Gil.

You mention process vessels / pipe, so I am assuming stainless steel. If so, I have had great success with ECOLAB products (note: I am not affiliated in any manner with ECOLAB) STERBAC is a sanitizer based on a quaternary ammonia formulation. ACCOMPLISH is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and surfactant additives and AC-300 which is a high acid cleaner (Phosphoric / nitric) which will also assist in creating a "Passive" layer. For outside of vessels and pipe (again stainless) you can try watered down versions of AVESTA products. BE CAREFULL, USE PROPER CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT>>>PROTECT YOURSELF< YOUR CO-WORKERS AND SOUROUNDING AREAS.

In our pulp mill we use formic or sulpharmic acid. If you use the sulpharmic acid be careful not to get it too hot as it can turn to sulphuric acid. Rex Dev.

Hi REX!

Finally someone talk about a chemical and not a commercial product. To help me for my cleaning in areas containing cementitious products: What % of sulfamic acid solution you suggest and how to get the best and fastest in solution? Appreciate your comment and help, Gil.

We get the sulphamic acid in a powder form and it is mixed to a ph of about 1.5. The heat exchangers we are using it on just now are vertical and we pump the solution in the top and circulate it for about 4 hours. It is important to drop the temperature of the vessel before introducing the solution as if it is heated the chemical composition changes to sulphuric acid and this can cause serious damage.

Global Spec is indeed a great help for aquiring information and knowledge on various technologies.

Contributions from members and guest is a hughe resource and am sure many are benefited due to this platform.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the members and guests for the valuable inputs from such postThe active contributors, infact are a resource and it and take this opportunity to thank am thankful to all members for their valuable inpouts on the subject.

With so many technocrats engaged in chemical cleaning / hydroblasting etc, am wondering if there are companies providing these services (not just the product) globally. Most of the service providers are local contractors, and although thay offer effective services, I am looking to know any company/ies who provide such services globally.Information on listing of such companies would be of great help.

Check out the link I sent from Aquadrill International. And no, I don't work for them. They can hydroblast pipes and vessels hundreds of feet high without risking confined space entry and usually in situ so downtime is much reduced.

For Pipelines pigging is advisable before any cleaning or hydrojetting operations. Even for multiple product lines cleaning can be avoided in pipelines if due care taken while pigging. Pigging is the process of passing soft cylindrical sponge or hard cups with the use of compressed air through the pipeline normally to empty the line. Pipe lines bends need to be of 6D radius or above for smooth piging operation.

For tanks especially for Crude or oily tanks chemical suppliers are offering cheaper materials which can save time, manpower and hydrojetting operations

For heat exchanger tubes hydrojetting operations are widely used.

Prior to Painting, surfaces are blasted using sand, coal slag, copper slag or garnet as per requirement.

For sand moulded castings, shot blasting gives better results.Shot blasting is blasting with the use of tiny metal balls especially in closed chambers or in shot blasting machines.

Each method of application has its own standards.

Srijit

You have picked a pretty complex question. There are several excellent books - which are probably out of print.. the best is "industrial Chemical Cleaning" by McCoy. the next one is "Technology for Chemical Cleaning of Industrial Equipment" by Wayne Frenier.

Each system you clean has a number of import questions you have to answer before you make any decision on what the best chemistry is to use. You need to know what you are removing, what the system metallurgy is, what secondary hazards you need to consider, and what are you going to do with the waste you generate.

the discussion of Sulphamic acid is a good example. Sulphamic is good for removing water scale deposits or iron sulfides. its very slow on iron oxides and next to useless on organic deposits. Also you should never apply sulphamic acid without adding the proper corrosion inhibitor. Doing so on carbon steel will undoubtedly result in severe corrosion damage to the steel.

Each system used has specific limitations and requirements.

I can be contacted directly if you are interested in more information.

I recommend using PowerGreens H2Pro Cleaner/Degreaser. It's a green cleaner that actually breaks down grease and oils into their base fatty acids and allows for a better cleaning with no residue. Place parts in aqueous solution, agitate or scrub, then rinse clean or you can use spray equipment. For heavey duty cleaning, we make high concentrate products. I This will get oils and grease off in a safe manner without the worry of solvents, voc's or other toxic chemicals in the mix. Check it out at www.thepowergreen.com

Chemical cleaning is the better option to clean out the entire pipeline. Hydrojetting can be done only for short pipeline as restricting to the length of the lance and its free flow inside the pipeline.
