Direct Tv Hughes Box and LNB

07/07/2008 10:45 PM

Many years ago I bought a Hughes Direct Tv Box and LNB and signed up with Circuit City for Direct Tv Service. This lasted for about 4 or 5 years and I got tired of watching the same re-runs on different chanels and decided to cancel the service. I still have the box, controller and LNB. The Box was working when I canceled the service. I have the instruction manuel. The box and controller is in good shape in a plastic bag. The LNB is still on the roof pointed to Direct TV.

QUESTION: Is there any use for this box besides Direct TV?

I am 82 years young and have been an ET for 65 years since I got out of the Navy in 1946.

All answers and questions will be appreciated.

Dear John,

Oh, God, I'm writing a "Dear John" letter to a vet.

I would call your local Direct TV outfit and ask them for an evaluation. It may be that the antenna needs replacement due to wear and it may be that your Home Theater controller might have to be upgraded to support the latest codex's. Start with the phone call and go from there.

Good Luck

P.S. I'm a 50 year old programmer.

Might be able to turn it into a RADAR unit with some additional parts.

Thanks all for the useful info. I think I have found a way to use the LNB reflector. remove the LNB from the reflector. I am experimenting with it on UHF tv. I am trying to put a small UHF dipole at the apex and direct it toward the TV station. Not much luck yet.

Thanks, Orpheuse: I have been out of the loop for about 20 years because of bad health but I am up and going again. I started out with a First Class Radiotelephone license when I got out of the Navy in '46 and started working radio stations and then Tv stations and wound up with a TV shop for 6 years then retired in '88 working in the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston.

I am an Amateur Extra Radio licensee and a Fixed wing Pilot licensee having lost my Medical 30 years ago because of heart problems. I am having fun with gardening, diy projects with antennas and such.

The Hughes Box is of no importance and will just stay where it is because I do not wish to get on satellite TV anymore. Anyway, I will stop rambeling and let you write another dreaded "Dear John" letter. HO HO I am a WW2 Navy Vet myself having served in the Phillipines, Okinawa and the occupation of Japan for 6 months.

Take care and "keep the programmer gear dry"

Good Luck with whatever God would have you do.

Building a radio telescope out of it sounds like it might be fun. Another step along that road would be to see what SETI is up to.

John, we like you. Even if we didn't the challange is what drives most of us. Also, the idea of using exsisting technology in a way it was never meant to be used is, well, appealing.

Stay in touch, buddy,
