Thanks for your response! I make a short research and the material look too expensive and hard to processed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakelite

http://search.ebay.com/Bakelite_W0QQdfspZ32QQfromZR40QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ34QQsbrsrtZd

We are looking a cheaper material easy use to make a small toy with a manual process.

Not too much budget.

I recently came across this awesome stuff. It is organic, renewable and very versatile. It also can be coated with thousands of non-toxic colors and coatings.....

Look very good!

Do you know the raw material used?

or manufactory process needed?

If you are going to make a limited number of toys by hand, I would contact a company called mouldlife www.mouldlife.com or www.mouldlife.co.uk, Personally I have only had contact with the UK shop, but they are really helpful, and will be able to guide you through the materials and briefly the processes you need. (give them a call)

It is really hard to coment on what kind of moulds you need to make your toy without knowing what kind of materials you are going to use or how our sculpt looks like. However it sound like you need a silicone mould (transil 40*1 is a good option), and maybe cast it in either injection style (with syringes) or pour it with fastcast. (Easyflow 120, is excellent, dunno if it contains lead though)

Good luck

Where are you?

Durham's rock hard water putty looks good but only appears to be readily available in the States. (Anybody know of something similar in the UK?)

How about polymorph plastic:

Product Features
· The revolutionary plastic that melts in hot water and can be moulded by hand
· Hardens as it cools - strong as nylon
· 101 uses for DIY and model making such as prototype mechanical parts or armatures and frames for models
· Becomes easily mouldable at just 62°C.

It's quite expensive: $10 for a 100 grams $70 for a kg. Although one UK outlet sells for about $30 for a Kg.

In fact they've got loads of interesting stuff which might give you ideas (Chromatic Alginate?).

How about a eutectic alloy: Fields metal or Woods metal (I think only one of these is still regarded as safe).

polymorph plastic

Isn't that what they make 1-off castings and supports out of for sprains and breaks?

My mum had a plastic thingy that was molded to her wrist to help force it to a position, to be worn for a few hours in a day after a hand operation (tendonectomy)

Dunno. If it is, I bet the medics have to pay a lot more for exactly the same stuff, because "it has to be certified for medical use".

Plastics are typically one of two varieties; thermoplasts or thermosets. A quick google of these terms will further the types.

I am afraid that if I tried to explain from memory my old materials instructor might read this and resend my prior grade...even from some 10 years ago.

Polymers generally are classified into two broad groups in accordance with their behavior upon heating.

Polymers that can be repeatedly melted and solidified (without damage) are said to be thermoplasts; those that

solidify once but will not melt again with damage are said to be thermosets. Technically, though only

thermoplasts are true plastics, even though the term "plastic" is commonly applied to all synthetic polymers.

Both the polymorph stuff and the Duram stuff looks pretty cool.

I think i misunderstood your purpose when I read your post. If your making a one of toy, I would consider using super sculpey www.sculpey.com or milliput www.milliput.co.uk. I prefer to make my sculpts with sculpey, over a solid milliput aramature, as the sculpey is easier to sculpt with, but the milliput, which is an epoxy based putty, is rock hard and really strong. Milliput is a UK product, sculpey is from the US, I have never come across anything better than sculpey, however, I am sure you can find similar products to milliput if you need to, try search for epoxy putty.

Good luck
