Induction brazing problems.....

07/08/2008 4:23 PM

What is the best way to ensure a complete braze on shoes for hydraulic pump components? I'm using 4140 and cda673. Parts consistently return from vendor with voids in the braze joints. Please help!

What sort of braze material is in the steel/bronze joint?

Do you use any weights to compress the joint?

Are you ramping the heat up & down and dwelling or just heating until you see the material melt?

Voids in braze joints are often related to poor design of the joint. Gas developed during heating must be able to vent, or it will create voids. Vacuum brazing can sometimes solve this problem.

In addition to this good advice, Is it possible that lead from the CDA 673 is still liquid in the braze joint at the time the assembly is moved? LEad content is pretty high in 673- as much as 3%.

milo"Lead exudation is often seen at brazing temperatures and above."
