Processor with Video Card complications?

07/10/2008 2:58 PM

Hello Gents,

I have an Intel Xeon processor and using an ATI Firegl v7100 with 3GB of RAM. I keep crashing my computer, especially when trying to use SolidWorks08. I have plenty of video lag and lingering pieces of menus left on screen all the time. Someone told me that the crossover can do some bad things sometimes and was wondering if anyone else has issues as well. It crashes so often that it is becoming worthless to me. This is my work computer, so I will need to come up with some good reasons for requesting either a new tower or card. Both very good products but am worried about the Intel ATI crossover.

Are you running the latest drivers (8.44) for your graphcs card?

I had the same issue on another work station here, then upgrading the graphics driver fixed that problem, that was in SW2007

I had the added problem of the model disapearing on the screen, now all solved.

I'm running A'desk Inventor on a Xeon quad core with an ATI Firegl V3300 (don't ask please ) with no problems whatsoever. As Snaketails said it's most probably your video drivers.

Just as an aside. Sometimes the latest version isn't the best (buggy), especially from my long time experience with ATI. Don't be surprised to have to use an earlier version to get good performance.

Also, make sure you're running Directx 9.0c.

Thanks,

I will double check and verify with IT. Sometimes the IT guy can't keep up with the lastest stuff and can get behind, but sometimes just can't be helped. Anyway thanks for any help.

Solidworks use OpenGL, no Direct X.

Check with Solidworks website to find the stable driver version.

Good point. I haven't used Solidworks in a few years so had forgotten that tidbit.

I have had no problems with SW'08 (Beta testing) on a nVidia GForce 7800GTX not a recommended card on the SW recommended listing, but I wasn't after the performance of the Quadro's (or the expense)

With a Quadro, you can open more windows without slowing down. With a non-Quadro, 4-5 windows and it slow to snail.

Windows opening is just a function of video buss speed and video card memory capacity, also combined with the complexity of the model your trying to display

Correct. Multiple 3D cad windows will need lots of memory and proper memory management. Of course if its only 2D windows, you can have as many as you want but we're talking about 3D accelerated windows here.

Gaming and mainstream video cards are designd to have one accelerated display window only. You won't play a few 3D games at the same time. So multiple 3D accelerated windows is not supported in driver or hardware.

When working with cad design, you'll be working with a few parts and assemblies at the same time. So multiple accelerated windows is a must.
