07/12/2008 1:39 AM

hello....

I am Rahim Munir Soomro......... My issue is that.... there are plastic (polythene bags) are in used for the packing of food stuff in our Jamat Khana (Mosque).....

I want its replacement... How can I replace the polythene bags and what other thing we can use for food packaging.... (there are many liquids also)...... I have a team working (volunteerly) in Energy Related issues in my mosque.....

one more thing... there are tubelights installed for the lightning at night time... replacing it with energy savers will save significant amount of energy or just a small amount?? (There are almost thousand tublelights)

last thing.... I live in Karachi, Pakistan. I want to start project on volunteery basis.... for energy savings.... can anyone suggest any nice project already done or vague idea about it.... because my team is at peak active now, so i want to use their energy in the right direction....

Please help and suggest...

What is the purpose of the bags?

Convenience

protection

preservation

reusing bags or other containers is the easiest.

By tube lights do you mean fluorescent?

what is the size of the space(s) & the wattage of the present lighting?

Do you need to be able to read?

is the color of the light important?

Hello..

thanks for your reply....

Pupose is to help the world in removing global warming effect... convenience is in the plastic bags, but i want to go greener. i have read on some websites that use of paper bags consumes more energy because making of paper bags require 500% more raw materials and transportation is also high for paper bags.... I am kind of confuse between plastic or paper bags....
Plastic bags are being re-used constantly.... till bag's death.

By tubelight i meant simple long lights... i dont know they are flourescent or not... but simple Panasonic's Lights have been installed.... Area is quite large, it can accomodate 1000 persons at single time.... I dont know... how much watts does it is taking.... but i will try to know that by tomorow....and Color is no issue..

Here in the US the grocery stores have begun to encourage customers to bring their own cloth bags, by charging for paper or plastic bags.

fluorescent tubes would be around 5cm x 120cm or 250cm.

You could probably change to Mercury vapor or sodium arc lights & save some energy.

I've sent you a personal message about Apix, an open source sustainable energineering think tank

Hi Mr.Soomro (Warrior?),

Here in India some restuarants pack food in either plasic container or in aluminum foil shaped containers. Both can be recyled. Regarding lights you can replace them progressively with Energy saving lights mfd. by Philps or other good makes. These are like coiled bulbs. Chinese make burn out quickly. You should replace tube lights when they have burnt out otherwise you have problem of simply throwing away tube light in large quantity.By the way I was born in Karachi but now I am in Mumbai.

Re: lighting - real or artificial; food bags - the same

07/13/2008 6:38 PM

Hello, Soomro. About the lighting . . .

In a place with abundant sunshine, where most activities go on during the day, where there's floor space for 1000 prayer rugs, where there is a dome (and minarets?) . . . I would look into ways of supplementing (including only partial or restricted-hours use of) the existing artificial lighting.

If Imam could be convinced to approve, it would seem to me that the geometric exterior motif of Muslim holy places would lend well to the use of light pipes which could bring direct or indirect (sun) lighting into the interior space; if the interior is tiled, so much the better. Additionally, photovoltaic power might also be feasible on the mosque roof or as a fitting decorative augmentation of a minaret. No, this would not be quick or inexpensive . . . but it's atmospheric warming, and Islam, we are speaking of; that along with probably phased installation . . . a long view and enduring patience would seem to offer the best rewards.

I dine frequently at a Chinese restaurant in Calif's central valley. About a year ago that restaurant recently installed just four large, translucent skylights in the ceiling of the large dining room. Since then, I've noticed that the tube lights (there are about 25 quad fixtures) do not come on at all until the sun is about to set in the evening; so the fluorescents only light about one (summer) to three (winter) hours per day. The light color qualities between the sky lights and the tubes is very similar. Visibility is good at all times . . . sufficient for (menu) reading at any point in the room; and . . . no shadows, even with sky lighting alone.

About the food packaging . . .

If this is for charity purposes I would suggest that the aforementioned canvas bag idea is a good one, for many reasons:

  • By my observations of middle-east exports (and apparel worn by mid-easterners) Pakistan and middle east workers produce the best textile products . . . so there should be an abundance of qualified volunteer labor to draw from . . . if making the bags is incorporated as a volunteer Mosque activity.
  • The bags are not expensive. (In the US canvas bags about the size of a brown paper bag (two plastic bags) sell for about $1. Stretchy bags made of parachute-like material will accommodate about 4 (or more) paper grocery bags, and sell for about $3-4.)
  • In addition to making and distributing the bags in addition to food, you could provide an "exchange program where food recipients would return with the bags for exchange or refilling.
  • Surplus bags produced by volunteers (or purchased) could be sold to fund food and other charity and mosque programs.
  • Further use of plastic bags, or paper, would be curtailed . . . you would only need a small supply on hand to meet unexpected "emergencies" in food distribution.
  • You will have essentially eliminated both plastic and paper from the local waste stream.
  • Use of textile bags also might support local (trustworthy) "textile growers/breeders"

What do you think?

Hello,

about this plastic bag,you probably know that this plastic bag are made from HD polietilene (high density),and big trouble is that this polietilene is not good for enviroment, desintegration of this kind of polietilene in outdoor is take many years. Now days is new legal act ready for use, all plastic bag are now made from LD polietilene (low density) it is biological for enviroment, desintegration of this kind of polietilene in outdoor is few month.
