To

Shri V.S.Rathod Saheb,

It's a very interesting question that you have asked on OLTC, which I suppose relates to Power Transformers or even Voltage Stabiliser units.

The problems of OLTC are umpteen in character and the solutions are also tremendous , but we have to spell out as to what problems we are confronting while operating OLTC and what solutions are available from our participants.

The best way is to visit the nearest grid substation and and exchange the views on maintenance and solutions of OLTC. You will get enough information to make the ball roll.

Main problem arises due to lack of routine maintenance checks. The OLTC gets jammed and then the real problem to solve the voltage prolem comes up in the grid system since we have to do tap changing manually and during rainy season it is risky job in the S/S.

Then there are various other problems which can be solved in the routine course depending upon the nature of the problem and various solutions available to confront the problem.

Dear Mr. Ulhas,

The moisture ingress to OLTC will result into problems of various nature commencing from jamming to flash over.

I want to know whether the problem is with type M model? If yes, I may tell you the locations from where rain water can enter. Pls let me know

Dear Mr. Pradhan,

The rain water enters through weather corroded components. How to stop corosion of affected parts in situ? What chemical treatment will stop further corrosion?

The water prevention oil seals on shaft slowly give way for moisture entry.

Can we do something to stop corrosion further? We can not make correction at manufacturing source due to reasons beyond our control.

Suggestions please,

regards

VS Rathore

Dear Shri V.S.Rathore Sahab,

For preventing the corrosion of the components due to erratic weather conditions and to make the assrembly water tight, during the year 1959-60, I used to receive manufacturers samples esp to counter the aforesaid problems. The name of that product is LOCTITE SEALANT.

But considerable time has passed and so I do not have that product sample with me neither I remember the name of the manufacturer.

If you come across the requisite information , just try to procure the said product to solve your problem.

Ulhas Pradhan
