Autodesk Inventor 2008

07/17/2008 4:18 AM

Helow!

I need some help for hole thread notes. In a drawings when I`m trying to put thread notes it always give me this (example M5x0,8) which is a default. But I want, when I click to a hole thread, that automatically, not manually, writes just M5.

I tried all in a edit dimension style, hole thread notes to change the settings, but nothing happens. The question is how can I disable the pitch??? that will automatically give it to me just (example M5)

Thanks

P.S.: Sorry for any spelling mistakes

Try to edit the threads.xls spread sheet located in: C:\Program\files\Autodesk\Inventor 2008\Design Data (Save a copy first, i.e. threads-old.xls) edit the column(s) that that you want to display a specific way "M5" instead of M5x.08 , close Inventor & restart.

Hope this helps

This is the right approach, in the xls file edit the custom thread designation column to show whatever you want displayed. Then, with a drawing open in Inventor, 'format', 'style & standards editor', 'dimension', 'default', 'notes & leaders tab', tick the 'custom thread notes designation' box.

Why would you not want to fully describe your feature? By pointing to a hole with a note M5 only tells one that is a hole for an M5 -something- and nothing about the threads required for your design intent. It may look like it has threads but you are telling the machinist to make a hole for an M5. Depending on the desired pitch determines what size drill to use (they are different for fine, med., and coarse). Maybe you will want to hand tap that hole later so then call out the hole diameter and drop the M5. Do you want them to put threads in that hole or not? If so, then tell them exactly what thread pitch you want. Calling out the thread pitch explains that you want it threaded and whether they are to be fine, medium or coarse.

I am very interested to reading your answer because I am still trying to figure out why some designers here do/did exactly what you are describing.

M-threads with no explicit pitch designation are assumed to be coarse, which is the common general purpose choice for steel mechanical fasteners. There are applications that never require finer pitches. I know of entire shops that almost never use finer threads, so when they see a pitch callout they expect to see a non-default pitch, hence fine pitch. In those cases calling out the default pitch, which is not required by standards, will likely cause confusion rather than help.

Imagine calling out RH for all threads (another default) except the few that actually need to be LH... Explicitly calling out defaults, if not done judiciously, tends to produce clutter. Anyway, no one choice is right or wrong, so best practices may (and do) vary between people and shops.

As the original post is not concerned with this interesting issue, reluctantly, I have to mark my comment as off-topic.

Select GB Metric profile under Tread Type instead of ANSI metric or ISO metric, and it will write just M5, however you will run the risk that who ever builds your part will use the wrong pitch (M5x0.8 or M5x0.5 in ANSI and ISO)

Thank you for the answers

The problem is, where I work, becouse if I write M5x0.8 which is so called normal pitch, then for somebody in the production line will think that is M5 with some special pitch and if he will be not so shore then he will check until he will learn someday. This is time consuming and for somebody also confusing. It also happens to me that when I draw an part with threads, with special pitch, then in production line he thought that it is a normal pitch

Becouse for this mistakes, here where I work we write for the normal threads just M5, for special threads with special pitch, then we write (example M5x0.5).
