Outlok - Emails that can't send

07/18/2008 11:05 AM

I have a recurring problem (occassionally). Sometimes after I hit send on an email, if I check my outbox it will stay there even after I hit "Send/Receive". The status will say it is sending but when it is "finished" sending, the file remains in the outbox. It is not dependent on what ISP I am connected to as is happnes sometimes when I am connected in my office as well as when traveling. The odd this is that if I close outlook and restart Outlook, ALMOST every time it then is sent and leaves the outbox.

Anyone have any clues as to what is going on and what I can do to prevent it? Thanks in advance to all of you software gurus.

Hello LaMarTEK:

I had a similar problem..................

Go to your email (mine is outlook express)

>click tools>click options>click send-tab>

Under International Settings> tick, send messages immediately.

This is the configuration in Windows XP.

Let me know if it works and, tell me what your email options box has ticked please.

I encountered a similar problem on a co-worker's system several years ago... I'm trying to remember how we fixed it... It had something to do with the recipient address.

From what I recall, she had created the recipient's address book nickname* as something like "myfriend@someisp" -- Outlook seemed to get confused by using the "@" symbol in the nickname, so it could not resolve the actual address.

If you are sending to more than one recipient, Outlook may report "sending" as it goes to the good address, but since it could not successfully send to all, it stays in the Outbox.

* I do not use Outlook, so I may be using incorrect terminology.

Hello pantaz:

I agree with part of what you say. I have tried an '@' sign in my nickname and it works fine. If the recipient address was not correct the email would not sent at all and would be returned as not found. As the email is eventually sent in this case by the poster the 'send to' address must be right.

It may have happened to you in windows 98? I had '98' for a couple of years but cannot recall what happened with any particular sent emails.

If the address is good, then, as you say the message will be filed in the 'Out-box'.

You may want to check your Outlook mail quota size. If there are too many mails left not archived whether in your Inbox, Drafts, Junk E-mail, Sent Items or even your Deleted Items and Calendar, these will eventually choke up your mail quota you have and you would not be able to send out any mail and that mail will continue to remain in your Outbox.

You can go to Tools -> Mailbox Cleanup. Click on View Mailbox Size to check

Hello Guest,

What you say I have not heard that before. I no emails can 'bounce' if the recipients email is full. But that only applies to their inbox.

I can't see why anything other than your sent mail configuration can affect your sent mail though. And in this case I believe the mail does actually get sent after the laptop is closed.

I can not answer why, but I have experienced the same problem. I found it to happen when I replying to an email message.

My solution is (and it has always worked):

do not click on "reply"

instead right click on the sender (header of the email message received)

left click on "Outlook Properties" and copy the senders email address

start a new email message and paste the senders email address in the "to" box

copy any relevant text from the received message into my reply, add my 2 cents and send it off.

regards,

slick

The sender has probably set up his account to block spam from spambots.

example:

joe@isp.com uses

joeNOSPAM@isp.com as his email adress.

You need to remove NOSPAM to reply, if not nothing goes out or comes in.

The process described is a work around.

The spambot is defeated, but a human is not.

Hello eriew,

I saved an email address using it as mu default using ----NOSPAM@myisp.com.

And if I tried to sent it to another OE mail address it would not send. However, I was able to sent it to yahoo with no problems.

This is caused simply by the way my AVAST! anti virus works. It stops and mail from being sent to and from and address within my computer but, obviously lets the new address work and sends it when directed to yahoo. Because of this I do not feel your 'test' is complete.

Try sending the OE address as you mention ----NOSPAM......etc, to a web email account. I bet it will work ok.

Hello slick,

I don't really know why it does not work (sometimes?) when you click to reply. Clicking to reply dose the same job as you explained you do by copying the email address into the 'To' field. Well as far as I know.

As you explain is exactly how I write my emails, if there is a couple of days or weeks gone by, it may not be relevant to just press 'reply' as things would have altered so it is best to start a completely new email as you say.

Re: Outlok - Emails that can't send

I appreciate all of the responses.

However, please note that the poblems occurs only occassionaly. When it does occur, it happens to addresses that I HAVE sent to successfully before and after. If the send/receive does not work (message stuck in the ourtbox), I can close OUTLOOK and changing nothing else, reopen it and the file sends. I have tken to adding myself as a BCC so that I can see when the file actually sends and have validated that is does send upon reopening outlook.

Still looking for a solution (other than closing and reopening).

Sounds like an "undocumented feature". You may have to contact the lads from Redmond for a resolution if that is the case. (OBTW, MiniSquishy will not admit to "errors", they refer to these as "undocumented features", hence the term I used.)
