At present we are using Industrial Diesel for our Caterpillar 3512 generator. Is this the best fuel for our equipment? Kindly send me information and details. Ty!

Kindly report to your CAT representative or look to the CAT manual and you will find out the recommendation of manufacturer and compare the requirements to the specifications of your "insdustrial fuel".

Yes, I agree. An engine of this sophistication demands only the range of fuels as recommended by the CAT man

I am not familiar with the term "Industrial Diesel Fuel". WHat is it exactly?

If it is a fuel that meets ASTM D975, it is acceptable for use.

If it is Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO), Residual Fuel, or Blended Fuel, it is not acceptable in Cat engines.

The best fuel has a high cetane, low API gravity, high lubricity, low sulfur, low gums & resins, low water & sediment, and low pour point.

You need to check your manual for the API gravity required for your engine. Most say between 30 & 45. Your engine was probably bench tested at 35. You will get more btu's (power) at the lower number. In other words, you will get more for your money.

The lubricity varies considerably from load to load. The more lubricity the better. There is only 1 fuel additive available that will give you the best lubricity available and meet all 7 "Premium Fuel" requirements; Diesel Treat 2000 by Schaeffer Manufacturing. Many of the lubricity enhancers actiually remove lubricity from the fuel, making it more detrimental to your fuel pump and injectors. An independent web-based blog (thedieselplace.com)confirmed this with independent testing of all the major fuel additives last year.

Give me a call if you need more info @ 216-401-1845.

Caterpillar has published High speed diesel specifications for the engines manufactured by them you can call your nearest CAT dealer who will answer your query in the light of EPA and EU emission regulations you need to use the fuel that matches fuel specified by Caterpillar what ever the engine model or Else you may end up costly replacement of fuel injection system of your 3512 engine.in addition violating emission standards of your country i have the cat specs but might be out dated hence this advice

I have worked in the diesel fuel injection industry for years and the greatest damage to injectors is contaminated fuel or fuel with high sulphur content. The injection pressures these days are high to atomize fuel and improve emission. Any dirt that gets through diesel filters is potentially harmful.

Start by having a compitent fluid sampling lab check your "industrial diesel". Who ever is doing your oil samples can do this. Then refer to Cat publications to see if you are in spec.
