Using "blankets" to prevent glacial melt

05/11/2005 5:05 PM

Like workers at a Cristo installation, Swiss officials have begun wrapping parts of the Gurschen glacier with plastic sheets to slow melting. The glacier is part of the Gemsstock ski resort above Andermatt in central Switzerland. The protective, largely polyester sheeting will cover 3-4,0000 square meters, costing some 100,000 Swiss francs. Such dramatic actions may become commonplace as global temperatures continue to rise.

Every fall they rebuild the ice bridge? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get rid of the glacier and build a real bridge?
