Crude Oil Sludge in Storage Tanks

09/17/2006 4:26 AM

I need to find a scientific method to draw a map of the sludge inside a tank and calculate its volume, bearing in mind all necessary precautions taken in oil fieds.

I don't have much (any) experience on exactly what precautions you need to take in the oil field to measure the sludge, but maybe this will help or give you an idea. Photonics Spectra just did an article on asphaltene and how they were running a study on it's properties using it's natural Fluorescence. http://www.photonics.com/content/spectra/2006/September/tech/84209.aspx

Maybe there is a contact that could help you with what you are working on.

There is a density change at the layer between the sludge and surrounding fluid, this will reflect sound waves transmitted through the fluid. Use some form of sonic depth sounder or sonar system.

Dear Sir/Madam,

There a new method to measure the volume of sludge in crude oil and visualise it all in 3D. This method has just been luanched and currently in use in various European countries. For further information please take a look in www.oceanscan.co.uk and the product is T-TYPE Tank Inspection System.

Hope this helps
