60deg V Threads - tolerancing for plated and unplated

07/24/2008 2:28 PM

I am faced with trying to understand if one set of tolerances could be used for a design with 60 degree V-threads where for some designs will require only an oil coating and for other designs require zinc chromate plating of thickness .0008" max per surface. This will allow leadtimes for plated parts to be cut down significantly, as my design could be stored on the shelf as an unplated part, and if plating is required, shipped out for plating without having to wait to make the parts with threads for clearance to accomodate the plating. I would like to think this could be done, but my concern is that when unplated the clearance between external and internal threads (flank faces) will be too great or when plated the clearance will not be enough. How does one determine the minimum and maximum clearance between external threads and internal threads?

What is your total tolerance on the threads, cpk for the process generating that tolerance, and the spec limits of the plating, and the cpk of the plating process?

You did not give the standard for the Threads (internal or external) either.

Your pitch diameter will need to be adjusted by 4X the plating thickness. Given the relatively large plating thickness, using the same thread in a plated or unplated condition may not be possible unless there is enough tolerance in the threads pitch diameter such as you might have with a large diameter thread. Machinery's Handbook has the thread tolerances for both ID and OD threads. You can calculate clearance from their numbers.
