Ages ago I saw a piece on TV where they use common 5L plastic containers. I think they filled 'em with water, or air very good for energy absorbtion and the could be refilled under pressure if necessary to return to the original shape.

That may be something to look into.

If only we had a more Gallic aproach to car bumpers (e.g let them bump)..we'd all save a fortune. The amount of resources which must get wasted in minor cosmetic repairs is horrendous.

sorry it is but a distant memory and the crystal ball is clouding over.

Gallic approach <mumbles pffhh! shrugs and walks off>...
That is the Gallic (French) aproach...the casual shrug , I think they use bumpers for bumping and don't give it a second thought....
Us Brits are too tight arsed...
I once had a Woman go into a vitriolic tirade because my Fibreglass Reliant Robin had touched her chrome bumper in a carpark and left the tiniest bit of blue paint on the chrome... I scraped it of with my fingernail ...she still raved on. In the end I had to insist she get in her car and check all the rear lights (and brake) worked...for fear that she'd try and claim some huge insurance bill. Oddly enough once I became forceful she became compliant .

You should have tried the American approach. Just lean your gun out the window, and inquire if there is a need for any further formalities.

recoiling and reshapable car bumper

What a useless project. With all of the old railroad track in the world that needs upgrading, why not install a section of the track as wide as the car in the front, and back. If you think that iron bar is going to be damaged from some parking lot ding, or a bump while parallel parking you have never tried to move or lift rail.

Go ahead use the idea. Another year in school might be a good thing.
