Pinion Application

We are manufacturing small pinions for Starter Drive Assemblies Rebuilders, we are using 20MNCR5 right now but as the steel pricing are going up we are thinking of using EN-19 insted as it has similar composition to 8620. We need 55-57 HRC by case-carborizing meathod. Please advise your suggestions.

I'm not sure what you expect from this forum. Just manufacture and test the pinion with the material.

You could also perform a rating calculation and validate that with a test.

For this kind of problem, testing is crucial, so don' t go to the market without proper testing and validation.

Have always found that the smaller the piece-part, the lower the %age material cost/unit.

A high recall rate will be the 'kiss-of-death' on any product. Select & test materials acoordingly.

We face a similar issue in forging differential gears for axle assemblies. We traditionally use 8620 steel and pay a hefty surcharge for alloy content such as moly and chrome from the mill. We are undergoing testing with (SAE grade) 5119. It has lower alloy content (lower surcharge) and has shown to have similar performance characteristics. It is also possible to achieve your hardness requirements after carburize. Of course, a review of your load requirements and testing will tell you if this is a viable alternative. Good Luck!

I want tell you my experience working in purchases for mantenance:Delco Remy starters even originals not only candian versions or chineses copies had soft pinion in my opinion:we changed it a lot of times,sometimes those were fixed or improved with a file for technicians.I hated them,but i never bought or sent to make the flywheel teeth.The best material was from FKB or KB Bosch starter pinions:those seems improve theirselves by use and time,this is my opinion too.The workshop what fixed them asked to me send to make a pinion for a big starter for a small ship:It was long and small teeth,i asked to gear boxes forklifts manufacturer friend of mine:He used SAE3320:the same material he used for coaxial gear box for an hydraulic motor:looking the destroyed pieces i think is a great material:more elastic than SAE8620 this last one was used several times by other gears manufacturer whom i asked the big gears for really big box gears:when it becomes destoyed it starts for the teeth or parts of teeth.In my opinion any SAE XX20 could be useful but are not the same along the service and is not so easy decide the best or less than when you are under costs considerations.-
