Electric or Piston Motor?

07/31/2008 11:04 AM

Hi.

We have just begun a project on making a VTOL ( and we are at the very beginning, just gathering information for now. )

We don't have a lot of info about this so for the beginning I wanted to know whether to use a piston or an electric motor on our VTOL.

And what kind of engine is the must suitable in both economic and performance field.

My question may seem very simple so accept my apologize.

Thanks.

For a given power output, compare relative weight of each, including fuel system for IC (internal combustion) and batteries for electric. Are you also considering turbines?

i agree mostly turbines or jet engine, maybe a turboprop has enough power for the job?

Dear Epke, I would consider using a Tesla style turbine: it has a very high power to weight ratio, very good fuel economy and is incredibly simple to construct. For more information please research Tesla Engine Builders Association at TEBA.com.

Hi sharif,

You don't specify if this vtol is a type of helicopter of normal aircraft?

The English Harrier jet fighter is a vtol aircraft, it can take off and land vertically or hover like a helicopter and it uses jet engines for both forwards motion and take off.

Apology accepted, but the question gives reason for suspicion since it makes no mention of requirements, or even that the proto type is to be an airplane.

  • Air plane? Hovercraft?
  • Piloted or unpiloted?
  • Range? Speed?
  • Payload?
  • Full size, downscale, or model/toy?

Or the fabrication and assembly capabilites and reach of the "we" who would produce the prototype. Your's is a very unusual request to be coming from anywhere.
