The gate valve is normally used because it permits

full flow when open and tight shut off

when in closed position. It facilitates

repairing or servicing traps, pumps and

other equipment.

The gate Valve are normally used but gate valves are lesser leak proof after 6months. and also throttling also difficult. better use globe valves

If the gate valves are exercised and its of good quality they will work fine, there is no need to throttle the condensate that's what the steam trap does. Globe valves as previously stated are for throttling, a good application/example of this would be on a bypass for a Pressure Reducing Station. Also Globes are typically more expensive and larger in physical size.
