Moving the Mighty Mississippi

09/19/2006 10:04 AM

The state of Louisiana will convene a planning meeting this fall to discuss a major diversion in the lower part of the Mississippi River. The diversion, which would be well downstream of New Orleans in the delta at the river's mouth, would send the river's muddy waters into marshes or shallow-water areas. The enginering challenges are considerable and include finding a way for freighters to make their way into the river's shipping channel. The New York Times has the full story.

If they bothered to refill all the canals that have been left open/ post exploration for rock salt domes, oil and gas drilling/ they would not be losing a football field of ground in the delta every minute. Since we have decided to control the Mississippi river and not allow the silt to be built up as it was done for thousands of years prior to the white mans colonizing we have no one to blame but ourselves and as a result we suffer the consequences of our actions and related inaction.
