Two approaches to combating spam

05/12/2005 2:17 PM

One legislative, the other technological:

Massachussets Attorney General Tom Reilly, assisted by Microsoft has successfully shut down one of the world's largest "spam gangs."

Vwani Roychowdhury of the University of California, Los Angeles, together with Oscar Boykin of the University of Florida and other colleagues are working on anti-spam programs similar to police databases on criminals. Essentially they are designing a trusted social network as a kind of extended spam filter.

Pro-Active Policing

05/12/2005 4:18 PM

Fascinating that Microsoft teamed up with law enforcement to nab with bad guys. I know that phone companies regularly comply with law enformcement's requests for wire taps, but this is some pro-active policing from the private sector.

Spam costs MS a ton of many a year as a lot of the spammers use Hotmail accounts and sent them to Hotmail accounts. It's like having people steal your envelopes and sending junk mail to you postage due.
