Residential DG selection

08/06/2008 8:47 AM

what can be the rating in KVA for a DG which can take up a load of 2T split air conditioner and some 800W halogen/CFL lighting loads? All single phase 230V, 50 cycles and the power rating of the ac is 2.1KW.

I have 5KVA in mind but like to have some design experts comments on this.

Thanks in advance.

it is good to run d.g on or around 80% of total load. Your selection of 5 kva is ok

with 80% derating it can take up the load but my concern is whether it can withstand the starting load of the a/c. If initially yes what about over a period of time? What kind of safety/derating factor I can assume?

Thanks again,

What is DG in the first place. Is it Generator? Please be specific because some of these terms are not internationally known.

Hi,

Normally ac torque load is very high than the running load. First check the starting torque of the ac, then decide for the DG rating. It seems impossible to start 2.1 KW ac on 5 KW generator.

consider the Ac load initially this is a auto regulating load and the starting in rush is high in my opinion you should be considering for a 7.5kva DG to reduce the flickers and disturbances when the AC starts
