Sulfuric acid storage tank maintenance

08/07/2008 10:15 AM

I am seeking a procedure for cleaning a sulfuric acid bulk storage tank. I have an NDT method available but am lacking a technique to safely and effectively removing the sludge buildup that has collected over the years.

There is probably an established procedure to do this. Can anyone help out?

Assuming that your tank is unlined mild steel - see this site

NOTE: Make sure as much acid is out of the tank as possible BEFORE you add water. Adding water to acid is not a good idea -

  1. It generates heat and the water can boil
  2. Puts the concentrated acid into a highly corrosive state
    1. Explosive hydrogen is formed when mild steel corrodes
