SMD Diode Markings

08/12/2008 1:23 PM

I have a surface mount diode, glass, SOD 80 type package, from a Keyence microcontroller, which has gone short circuit. The markings are a broad red band at the cathode end, followed by a narrow black band and a narrow green band. The ident on the pcb is D35 & a diode symbol, showing the cathode identified by a band. I take this to be a Zener but I cannot find any info anywhere to confirm this or indicate values. Can anyone help?

Regards

I typed this into Google: 'sod80 band colour code red black green'

which came up with: http://www.marsport.org.uk/smd/sod80.htm

where you will find

Rohm LL-34 package Zener Diodes RLZ Series
Three band colour code Third band is always Green

Type

1st Band

2nd Band

3rd Band

Type

1st Band

2nd Band

3rd Band

RLZ3.6BBlackPurpleGreenRLZ12BRedBlackGreen
RLZ3.9BBlackGrayGreenRLZ13BRedBrownGreen
RLZ4.3BBrownWhiteGreenRLZ15BRedRedGreen
RLZ4.7BBrownBlackGreenRLZ16BRedOrangeGreen
RLZ5.1BBrownBrownGreenRLZ18BRedYellowGreen
RLZ5.6BBrownRedGreenRLZ20BRedGreenGreen
RLZ6.2BBrownOrangeGreenRLZ22BRedBlueGreen
RLZ6.8BBrownYellowGreenRLZ24BRedPurpleGreen
RLZ7.5BBrownGreenGreenRLZ27BRedGrayGreen
RLZ8.2BBrownBlueGreenRLZ30BRedWhiteGreen
RLZ9.1BBlackPurpleGreenRLZ33BOrangeBlackGreen
RLZ10BBlackGrayGreenRLZ36BOrangeBrownGreen
RLZ11BBlackWhiteGreenRLZ39BOrangeRedGreen

So it seems like it may be a RLZ12B (12 volt Zener).

I probably don't need to tell you that Zeners are designed to operate in reverse bias. That is, the cathode (end with the black band) should be positive +12V with respect to the other end. If you check the diode with a normal meter (after removing it), it will look pretty much like a regular diode - low resistence in one direction only.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for that, much appreciated. No matter what I tried I couldn't seem to get an answer. Yes, I do know how zeners work allright, but better too much info than too little.

Once again, thanks.

This link contains all SMD codes and references (Diodes, Transistors,..)

I hope this help you
