Environmentally safe way of stripping silicone coating.

08/13/2008 11:43 AM

Hello. We strip silicone glaze off old bakeware using shellsol and glycol, unfortunatley the V.O.Cs are high and the local authorities are pressing us to find an alternative. Is there some magic solution that we can use that will be environmentally safer and lower cost ?

Cheers.

Here are a few companies and products that may help

CitriStrip - from Specialty Environmental Technologies, in Auburn Hills, MI.
Woodfinisher's Pride - from W.M.Barr & Co, in Memphis, TN.
Peel Away - from Dumond Chemicals, in New York. (212-869-6350)
RemovAll and Bio-Wash - from Napier Environmental Technologies in Vancouver BC

Grit blast it!~ in enclosed booths will be much more environmentally friendly. You must mean a "glycol ether" ansd some of these are real nasty! Mechanical removal is a better option if you keep the dust enclosed and dipose of it safely.

Thanks for that answer. The only thing about grit blasting is that it wont be cost effective. I was looking for a chemical solution which i can dip the parts.

Thanks again.

Build as brick wall and bash your head against it.

Mechanical removal of this material must be cost effective - maybe not in your cash ouitlay.

These polymers are made to be highly resistant to oils and fats and you talk about using a solvent syatem! They may be weakened and softened but you are kidding yourself - try a wire brush.
