device holder

08/13/2008 2:23 PM

Hi,
I am currently designing a holder for a device(s). My requirement
is that the device needs to be securely fitted within the holder, but
can be manually removed and then refitted from the holder - with ease.
My problem is that the device will be slightly different in size.
It can vary in both width, depth and length. The length and width can
vary by around 3mm were as the depth can vary by 6mm. Therefore the
holder really needs to be a universal! I have a number of ideas in
which I can achieve this but all seem to be expensive to manufacture.
I was hoping to make this from aluminium, although I believe the costs
of aluminum is quite expensive at this moment. Therefore if the
design permits this to be made from plastic then so be it. I have
included a diagram to show my current design.

Any comments will be gratefully received. Thanks.

Hello touchnturn:

can you give any indication what this will hold, and will the thing inside be stiff, flexible, paper, wood, metal. will it be talen in and out often?

I cannot read the very small writing is it relevant?

Hi babybear. Thanks for your reply

The thing that it is holding is stiff. Its basically like a PDA.

The reason that the size differs so much is that our client may decide to put the device in a case.

If I understood your requirements correctly, then you can design you gripper edge on an angle and like that the only change you need is closing on the width.

Re: device holder...........and redesigned cover

08/14/2008 3:41 AM

Hello touchnturn:

Glad to help, if I do!

Just a suggestion this.............. Is it on to design for the machine and when the leather case is made, leave leather on the corners, but, cut the leather off along the sides or ends, to the same depth as the 'edges' of your frame? (Not sure how they will fit in). But if the customer will accept this you can make the 'fit' nice and secure.

Hi babybear,

Not sure I understand exactly what you mean but if you are suggesting that I could redesign the case - for the device, then unfortunately this is out of my control.

Thanks for your help again. : )

Hello touchnturn:

yes, I did mean a redesign of the leather cover. But, also knew 'it' has nothing to do with the company who make the actual device.

I cannot remember the name of the 'plastic' but, making it from the same very strong and hard clear plastic as some picture frames are made from is my thought. It also looks good.

I wish I knew enough to draw you some small design elements I would include on the 'new' plastic model but I don't! Sorry.

I can't see anything wrong with your design but each different substance has to be made slightly differently?

Good luck.

Could you design your holder with a threaded adjustment, similar to a vise? Or use pins that would fit into a larger base allowing you to reset the holders position.

Have you looked at what is already on the market yet? Go by a store where they sell several varieties of cell phones, and study the design of the belt clips for some of them. I have a Motorola i-580 with Nextel (field phone & walkie-talkie) service for example that is pretty sturdy.
