Bearing Fittings for Taper Roller Bearings (32214)

08/15/2008 3:40 PM

we have one stirrer vessal which shaft has two taper roller bearings (32214) on the top of vessal. the shaft bottom was floating before our modification to guide with bush. now we are facing the problem of top bearing damage. is it because of modification. please advice me.

It is hard to determine from here what the cause of your upper bearing failure was.

Yes, it is possible that whatever modifications that were done could have led to problems. For example, if you did not install the bushing perfectly in-line with the agitator shaft it could be providing a moment arm that may be torquing over onto your top bearing.

Please provide a little more information so that we can try to offer suggestions/advice:

  1. Speed of the agitator?
  2. Size of shaft (length/diameter)?
  3. What is the substance/fluid being agitated/stirred?

Also, please provide a little history on this unit - including, did the shaft bottom start floating all of a sudden or did it gradually get worse? Did the shaft always float since it was installed? Has the fluid/speed been changed at all? Were the bearings replaced when the bushing modification was done? Has the damaged bearing been inspected? Is it properly lubricated?

There are many different possibilities to what is causing your problem, a few examples include:

- the agitator shaft is bent and is causing the floating.

- the bearings were recently replaced and installed incorrectly.

- the lubrication in the bearings is insufficient and it may be a coincidence that failure occured shortly after the modifications.

But getting back to your main question of did your modification cause the problem? Maybe, but if you give some more details someone may be able to help you troubleshoot the problem.

you are really genius u got what exactly i am saying

speed is 500rpm

shaft is dia 70mm length 2000mm

shaft having the screw to lift the hot soap (100 degree cel) in barrel or column

screw and barrel is closed in vessel.

when we opened we saw one grub screw at the bottom of the barrel as shown in picture so we assume there must be one bush to tighten it. so that we made one bush of hard mild steel material which is first mistake of my seniors. and the shaft material is ss.

we not found any worn out bush in vessel when we opened it.

we not changed speed of shaft

we replaced the old bearing

when we opened second time when it failed to run upside bearing cage was worn out one side more.

i will show u the picture of bearing but just see some pictures which i took when i

opened first time.

you can see bottom of the barrel has one sleeve fitted.

we fixed one bush in that because shaft size is 70 mm and sleeve is 90mm.this barrel is get fixed in vessel. you can see in first picture top of the barrel is having slots to soap come out.see the vessel.

we start to work on this because first time it was leaking from top of the vessel from seal. seniors are saying soap is transfering because of the pressure generating in vessel. but as per my opinion excess pressure is making the seal leaking. so its better to have air vent. please advice me to solve the leakage problem and thus bearing problem.

What drives the shaft? Is it connected with a belt/chain drive or through a gear-reducer?

When you say that the bearing is worn on one side - the first thing that comes to mind is that the shaft is belt/chain driven with too much tension (or the shaft is bent. Can you confirm that the shaft is straight?)

I don't fully understand that arrangement of the barrel/column in relation to the vessel to even try to guess and what is causing the leakage.

Could you perhaps do a small sketch (Microsoft paint, perhaps) and post what exactly is going on?

Lastly, are the bearings of the shaft submerged in the soap?

Another thought - what is the temperature of the substance you are stirring?

Because it could be the case that you restrained the shaft too much with your modified bushing and are experiencing thermal growth upwards - which may cause too much axial load for your bearings.

u can see picture of our vessel. geared motor is mounted on vessel which is direct coupled.

u can see barrel and screw in dotted lines.

u can see how the bearing cage is worn out .

please guide me.

Can you provide pictures of the bearing races?

One of the most common causes of bearing failure is lack of good quality lubrication. Was this bearing adequately lubricated?

I wonder if this is the case? -

  1. Your bearings failed for whatever reason (improper installation, lubrication, etc.)
  2. This caused your shaft/screw to wobble
  3. The wobbling led to the leakage from your vessel

A further indicatio would help : how are the 2 bearings mounted ?

>< or <>?

Did you chage their relative position as well?

the same doubt i had that time

i was not there when they dissmental the assembly and even i dont have drawing of bearing fitting

now i am just believing on those people who dissmental the assembly

is it possible bearings are fitted like this << or >>

Which direction has the axial force in function? I presume from up to down but I am not sure. Any way I think that the bearings should have been put in the >< position for centering the shaft and the other end let free to avoid radial parasitic forces due to eccentricity. It is not recommendable to use bearings in the >> or << way if there is not an other bearing for axial forces in the opposite direction. More than that tapered bearings work well with a slight axial preload which is not possible in the last 2 assemblies.

This assembly has the highest stiffness with respect to bending.

The other way <> has a lower stiffness but accepts a slight angular error. Try to make a sketch even rough of the bearing assembly in order to give more input and then we can give you better hints.

thank you very much you clear my doubt because i was aginst to my seniors to put bush down side

please help me to understand radial parasitic forces due to eccentricity

axial force is from down to up

screw is taking material from down and lifting it up

This means that force on shaft is from up to down. I shall have a look considering it.

The weight of the material you lift is from up to down. This weight will pull the shaft. You exerce a force from down to up on the material you lift
