What is this information used for?

Plants usually don't advertise what type of chemicals they use in production. However if you know what a particular plant produces you can probably guess whether hydrogen is used. For example, based on the subject of your post, hydrogen is commonly used in oil refining (hydrotreating processes). However, most refineries are self sustained, meaning other processes produce hydrogen (>90% purity) such as reformers, and then the hydrotreaters consume it. A refinery almost always functions on a hydrogen balance. Ill bet most plants produce hydrogen as needed in house because to store large quanitites of hydrogen (>100 MMSCFD) would require multiple, huge bullet type vessels.
