what does compensate on a RTD mean?

can u help me about the third wire on a pt100 RTD.i just know that it compensate but how.

This link shows the wiring for 2-, 3- and 4-wire RTDs, and explains briefly how the lead resistance affects readings and can be compensated for (depending on type).

In 3 wire Pt 100 3 wire compensate in this way , 3rd wire is parallel with other one.As u know resiatance in parallel is decrease. so as in 4 wire rtd 2 wires parallel in each other.
