UL and CE

08/25/2008 5:06 PM

I am installing several control cabinets with CE approval and UL components. The local inspector wants to see UL on cabinets. What would be the best way to proceed? Thanks

Contact UL and for a fee they will come to your location, inspect your system, and if it meets the UL requirements the inspector will put a seal on the installation. UL charges a daily consulting fee plus expenses. As I recall the cost is not too high compared to the cost of project delay due to dealing with a local code enforcement official.

The local code enforcement official can do pretty much what he/she wants, regardless of what the Code Book states. Do not make the mistake of agrivating the local official because he/she can and often does cause a lot of trouble over the life of a project or facility. Once you are satisfied that the installation meets code, just find a way to comply with the local offical's desires at the lowest possible cost.
