As boiler feed water evaporates in a boiler to produce steam, dissovled solids accumulate in the liquid holding. This is remedied by frequent blowdown of a portion of the condensate in liquid holding and bringing in fresh boiler feed water makeup.

The blowdown frequency is usually controlled by TDS levels and conductivity and should be optimized to operate at efficient levels since the blowdown condensate is at boiler temperature while makeup is much much lower.
