Methane to LNG

08/28/2008 12:28 AM

Have methane from landfill, wanting to convert to LNG, has anyone out there had experiance in building small plants to produce 500-1,000 gal/day of LNG, or know of any small comercial plants working.

Or what is required to build my own plant.

Cheers

Among the first thing to do is to determine the quantity of gas that your facility is producing and then determine the feasibility of the project. Liquefiers, even small ones are not inexpensive, therefore the gas field should be economically feasible before you embark on such undertaking.

You will need a liquefier to convert methane gas to a liquid (LNG) at -260 F. You would also need a storage tank to contain the LNG. Since carbon steel is not capable of sustaining tensile loads at temperatures below about -20 F, your LNG container would need to be made from at least 9% Ni steel.

In the US, the facility will be governed by the requirements in NFPA 59A and possibly by the FERC and the DOT or the authority having jurisdiction in the area where the facility will be erected.

You probably should discuss your intentions further with the AGA or the FERC.

Good luck.

Thank you for your thoughts, the plant will be built in Thailand, but similar rules and regulations would be similar i am sure, but the quaulity of materials would have to be the ame where ever its built.

i have been looking for a company that specialize in liquefiers, but have not found one that is interested in smaller plants, do you know where they would be available.

Cheers

You might contact York. I know they make compressors used in liquefaction. I am not sure if they make to entire liquefier. If they don't they may be able to direct you to companies that do.

Good luck.
