How rubber lined bushes are molded?

08/28/2008 2:18 AM

I wish to know the molding technique for rubber lined bushes. Rubber of 5 to 25 mm thickness is molded inside cylindrical brass or steel shell of say 5 to 15 mm thickness. I have seen bushes with ID (rubber) up to 300 mm and length up to 1000 mm. Is this possible by the commonly used pressure molding or injection molding techniques? Or is there any special tooling or machine available for molding these bushes of different dimensions?

Well the rubber bushing on boat propellers are pressed into the metal and they use BEE HONEY as the lube on the rubber.

I assume you mean rubber bushings. The way we do it is to start with a metal core, either inside or outside. We paint on a heat-setting adhesive, them place it into a mold with the uncured rubber. As the rubber cures, the adhesive is activated to bond the core to the rubber. We've made parts this way from small seals to 70 lb+ vibration isolators.

The only tooling required is the mold.

I guess the bushings you are referring to are comparatively smaller. I am talking about large bushes used for marine propeller shafts - I have given some indication by dimensions. I think molding rubber on the outside of a core is simpler than molding inside a shell. I am wondering how such a large mold is filled evenly with raw rubber and pressure / heat are applied for curing. I have checked with some of my friends who are into rubber molding, but not been able to get the answer.

The way we put rubber inside a shell is to mold the rubber part slightly larger than the metal shell, then hydraulically press the rubber into the shell after curing. We have made some pretty large parts this way. If you have any specific questions, my e-mail is hburt@robin-industries.com
