Oil Spill Detection Method

08/28/2008 4:47 PM

The primary means of locating oil for recovery is by sight. Observers in planes are used to help locate and track the movement of oil. The crews of the recovery vessels also depend on seeing the oil they are working to clean up. Nighttime, foggy, and rainy conditions limit the ability to detect and clean up an oil spill. Does anyone know of a system to allow recovery vessels to detect oil in inclement weather? Is there a a way to inject a 'glow in the dark' type of die that will stay with the oil?

How about using some submerged strong lights shining up through the spill. They would have to be remote controlled or use rigid telescoping tethers to place them away from the searching vessel. ???????

I don't know of one off the top of my head, but it should be possible (if expensive) to "bounce" a beam off of the oil. Think spectrography. The problem is going to be power/sensitivity, and the particular frequency acceptance or rejection characteristic's of water versus oil (or hydrocarbons).

Sorry I can't help more. Just a train of thought you might find useful.

maybe it is just my ignorance, but would you be able to detect it with a thermo-cam? Granted the temperatures will be similar, but the emissivity given off by a "black-body" may be different enough to allow detection. Just a thought.

When a subsea pipeline is leaking, and it's in an area that exhibits poor u/w visibility due to extreme silt/turbidity, etc (and most certainly in hours of darkness), divers simply use an underwater blacklight...

Read the manual...

Best wishes to all ~
