How do I stop critical updates prompt?

09/01/2008 2:52 PM

So I'm in the Stone Age! -- I'm using a system that runs Windows98 and keep getting prompts to view critical updates--I can keep selecting remind me later, but I would rather it didn't inter

rupt me at all (like it just did there)--suggestions? [for removing the annoyance, not to upgrade my IT and use this thing as a boat anchor!]

I've got an old laptop running ME. I think it's about the same as '98. Try going to START->RUN (if it exists!) and type msconfig [ENTER]. With a bit of luck, you'll get the System Configuration Utility, which has a tab called Startup - you can turn off the Updates thing - I think!

Anyway, it's worth a try. Good luck.

I don't remember exactly W98, but in XP just look in the Control Panel for the "Windows updates" and after opening the window, check the option "No automatic upgrades".

Sorry if the wording isn't exact. My OS is in spanish...

Kind regards

If you really don't want to install the updates you could view them next time you get the prompt, un-select the updates & 'OK'. You should then get a dialogue box with the option 'don't tell me about these updates again' or something like that.

I avoid automatic update alerts on my Win98 machine by never putting it on line...I have a cheaper laptop I use only for on line work...

Cheaper than a Win 98 machine? Where can I buy one of those?
