The lead screw is used for threading, the feed rod is for general machining. The feed rod runs much slower than the lead screw for finer feeds.

The internal gearing is different so that they give different feed ratios to the carriage. This is why they are locked out from one another on the machine. If both are engaged simultaneously the gear box or carriage drive will reduce themselves to bits.
