Research the Tesla Turbine engine. One of it's many uses is as a hydro-electric turbine. Large scale versions were used at Niagara Falls as one of the first generators of AC current to power the city of Buffalo, NY.

They are very inexpensive to manufacture and have a very high power to weight ratio.
