hydrogen sources

09/05/2008 11:10 AM

Hello.I recently had the information that some species of alga's could be used as a source to produce hydrogen.

I would like to know if this is indeed true, and were to find some more information on this subject (but usable one, like what sub type of alga's can be used , they origin, were to find them)

all for now!

To summarize all of the great links Guest has provided: being a water based plant, algae naturally harbors a relatively high amount of hydrogen as a result of photosynthesis, which researchers are extracting through the introduction of an enzyme. The only drawback at this time is that the said enzyme cannot tolerate the O2 molecules, a bi-product of this extraction process. I would encourage reading the articles provided by the Guest which discuss the numerous ways researchers are addressing this issue.

Thanks for all of the links, Guest.

Hydrogen can be produced quite easily : DC electricity is required , as large a supply

of it as you can get.Water is a Hydrogen/Oxygen compound : H 2 O , two molecules

of hydrogen and one of oxygen. If you apply a DC elecrtric current to water it will

separate into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas.Very volatile. If you separate the two

electrodes and tap off the two gasses separately , and compress it into storage

tanks (compressed gas tanks) one will be oxygen and one will be hydrogen.

You're right on this point. The problem is that electrolysis is a highly inefficient, energy intensive process. Using algae or bacteria, which produce their own energy to extract the hydrogen, is more efficient. That's why scientists view this as a more attractive alternative to electrolysis.
