Best casting practices for ALMAG 35

09/05/2008 3:19 PM

Hi Friends,

We have a sandcasted A356-T6 aluminum alloy part and we want to change the material to ALMAG 35 (535). Our intention is to avoid T6 heat treatment which we don't trully master.

We have successfully sandcasted the part for a while on A356 and we tried to use the same practice (flux, degassing product, feeding system and pouring temperature) on ALMAG 35 with terrible results.

Are there any recommendations for casting this alloy. We've done our homework and we know that we need a different flux due to Mg contents but we haven't found one yet locally in Mexico.

ALMAG 35 casting in Mexico is practically inexistent, so of we can get a recommendation on fluxing products and grain refiners we would be willing to bring them from the USA.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Make sure you have sodium free flux. Riser and gate like AA-713 Tenzaloy, hold at low temperatures, 1280-1300. raise to pouring temperature before pouring, use a grain refiner like Ti-Boron 5%-1% to improve fluidity and prevent shrinkage, use a drossing off flux to keep dross dry and not allow too much mag to be skimmed off. Foseco used to make a 180 tablet which worked. Probat-Fluss also had a sodium free-hexafluoride flux. A rotary degasser with N2 works good since it produces small bubbles. A large rolling boil with N2 IS NOT GOOD like you do for 356. Avoid holding overnight and use at least a 50-60% ingot charge. Do not only charge with remely. Too much Mag is lost. Good luck. I's not too bad to work with but like Tenzaloy it's a dog until you get the proper materials and understand that you have to respect it

Hi

We are into manufacturing this alloy Almag35 with no prior experience.

We have successfully done the casting in low pressure die but unable to achieve the Ultimate Tensile Strength and Elongation. We are falling short by 60 Mpa.

Any suggestion how to improve the properties.

Also this grade is non heat treatable.

Thanks

Sam
