Im an Undergrad Mech Engin too.

How about a human powered compact vehicle that has an auto alternator that is charged when provided rpm from the peddling. The charge could then be used to further power the vehicle as a motor or stored in a battery for other applications...e.g. could be a great source of electrical energy in remote locations...

Try to find ways to use nature's energy to produce some form of power that does not cost a fortune to implement.
