DGA ANALYSIS AND PD ACTIVITY IN A POWER TRANSFORMER 234MVA

09/09/2008 4:46 AM

READERS

A UNIQUE SITUATION HAS RISEN. ANNUAL ROUTINE ANALYSIS ON ONE OF THE 12 POWER TRANSFORMERS OF 234MVA EACH REVEALED THE FOLLOWING:-

1. HIGH PD ACTIVITY ON R PHASE .

2. DGA ANAYSIS SHOWS GASES I.E SPECIFICALLY >200PPM FOR HYDROGEN. CONTINOUS TESTS REVEALED/SUSPECT LEAKAGE OF SF6 GAS.

TO KNOW WHETHER SF6 GAS CAN REALLY ENTER THE OIL TRANSFORMER THROUGH THE BUSHING FROM THE GIS/GIB.

IF SO WHAT R THE STEPS REQD TO SOLVE/DIAGNOISE THE ABOVE PHENOMENA/SITUATIONS?

REGARDS

Gat a drawing for the busbar/isobus/transformer.

Examine it to see if SF6 can get into the transformer.

A halogen detector will identify SF6 in the transformer.

Any increase in acetylene , how about the Co to CO2 ratio?

If it is an old transformer , a furanic analysis would also give useful information.

Dear friends

Technically, I trust SF6 gas cannot enter the 3 yr old transformer through the solid bushing. However, if the oil is contaminated h2 gas can be formed. But agin, how can the oil in X'mer which is in service get contaminated. Online monitoring of SF6 do not reveal any change in the quantity of SF6.

By the way, Furanic analysis, whats it?
