wind turbine force

09/09/2008 2:06 PM

I would like to know if 2 inch scd 40 pipe will take the force.Right now I have made a vawt the rotation shaft is 2 inch steel pipe. The mast is scd 40 -4 inch pipe 18 feet above the ground.I have 2 pillow blocks mounted on the 4 inch pipe,One at the top and one 4 feet below the top. The 2 inch shaft that the turbine is conneted to is 4 feet above the top pillow block. The 3 blade turbine is 4 ft 6 in tall and ,each blade is 4ft6in x 53 in long.Everything works fine now.

What I want to do is to make new blades,Same area but hight and width different.

I want the blades to be 8 ft tall and 2 ft tall.My question .Will the 2 in scd 40 pipe hold up the the new diamentions. It will be twice as tall but half as wide.SAME hight above the top of the mast. (4 ft) The reason is higher RPM's

thank you

John

What is the average wind speed there?

Are you installing a auto or manuel brake system to stop the wind mill in high winds??

hi dadw5boys. The average wind is about 7 / 10 mph that is without any storms, then maybe 40mph.and the turbine went through the 40.Here is a link.

I also will be putting a break on it,I just wonder if the 2 inch scd 40 pipe will hold up to the leverage of the extra 4 ft.

tks

It looks good. I would cut me some metal or hard plastic to make covers the keep the weather out of the top of the bearings.

Darn that is a fine wind mill you should be proud of that.

Oh the only thing I would ask is did you weld a peice of metal cross bars on the bottom of the pipe that is in the ground ?

If you did not watch for the pipe to start turning with the force of the wind. It could cause so problems with the connection in high winds.

I forgot to weld cross bars on a Satillite Dish pole once before I poured the concrete. After a couple of years the wind would turn it 180 degress at times breaking the connections .

Bob,what do you mean by "you can share"? here is a link for the vawt and alternator disks,I threaded the pipe so that I could adjust the gap for the coils.I think it is much easier then useing jack screws.

Saw the picture on the link. Thanks. What kind of alternator are you using - is it a permanent magnet type? Bob

You won't mind if I copy your wing design for a wind mill will you ?
