3 pole or 4 pole or TPN ACB (Air circuit breaker)

09/14/2008 2:50 AM

Dear friends,

In our plant, it was decided to use old LT panels (PCC-power control center) in the new (proposed) substation. This decision saves us cost and time. But the old LT panels have 3P Air circuit breakers (L & T Make), while the SLD prepared by the consultant shows 4P Air circuit breakers.

My question is:

Can we go ahead with the 3-Pole ACBs ? Please note that all over the plant 4 pole breakers are being used. what are the practical/technical problems that may arise during operation ? How does 4 Pole ACB compare with that of TPN (Three pole - Neutral )

Please clarify

Regards

Without having the single line drawing in front of us and without knowing the scheme used for establishing, if any, the ground system in use in your facility, any answer given to you would be not much more then a guess nor not much better then one either.

Whether or not the neutral is to be switched depends upon many factors. Best advice... talk this over with your consultant. You need to KNOW all the ramifications of this decision before you make it.

Can you provide sufficient details like How many incomers are feeding(any parallel operation)? Neutral Ratings of ACB

Pls note that your terminology says that its a PCC (power control center),means that you may have 3ph motive or industrial load and single phase lighting loads and other small loads which requires phase and nuetral. In this case a 4P is mandatory but instead you will be only using to power three phase loadss like motors means your 3p breakers would be adequate.

In addition to this if you are more interested to only utilise 3p breakers and in the field you can provide a D/Y transformer to avail nuetral according to your load requirements, this will save lot of copper which avoids 4Runs of cable,

But at the same time pls be carefull that the panel should be having only one source of supply.

for further querries pls dont hesitate.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to put-forth your comments. The panels are fed from two different sources of supply with an interlock between the two.

Also i would like to know the difference between 4P and TPN

Dear friend,

Pls note that in 4P breakers neutral is opened/closed accordingly with 3 phases. In TPN breakers Neutral is closed forever,no control in it.It is my guess,If anybody find it mistake,Please give your correct answer.

Thanks&Regards.

yes u can use,

just install a contactor of heavy rating , make it single pole , provide control coil supply from closing coil supply of ACB, any enjoy by converting 3P ACB tp 4P ACB.

BUT NEVER TRY TO SAVE MONEY IN MAIN DISTRIBUTION PANELS.......

es u can use an 3 pole acb instead of 4 pole acb,

but still u hve to give protection to neutral with the fast acting fuse circutry as rating depends on the laod u have

u can use the same neutral for both the supplys u have at the same time but dont any sacrifice with the main distribution panel

this is a guess

if u have more inductive (vqariable)load then it become harder to control it with tp acb and fast acting fuse for neutral
