Restoring a Micro-Hydro System

09/15/2008 3:45 PM

Hi all,I need help to bring back to functioning life a 60 years old Micro-Hydro System.

I live in South Africa on a farm and I have no idea what I need to make the system working again. There is a channel bringing water from the river and a pipe bringing the water into an old shack and than back to the river. What type of component i need and what is their purpose? Can anybody help?

Some may know but I don't know what a Micro-Hydro System does. Can you explain what you are trying to accomplish?

Hi wareagle,if you dont know than you cannot help me but I will tell you anyway since I also found out the "proper name" a couple of days ago.A Micro-Hydro is a system whereby you use water to generate electricity on a Micro scale or for a small number of users in this case only two!

Ciao Mario

The system maybe a Pelton water wheel turbine. You have internet search on hydro-electric or small hydroelectric. The water wheel bearings are critical as is the generator bearings. You have to evaluate if this would be a hobby or financially justifiable. The repair parts maybe costly.

O/K Mario - Pin yer ears back!

Would appear that you have 70% of the job done for you already in as much as the biggest part of the job is most often getting the water to where it can be useful.

This it appears you have.

Now you need to find out how MUCH power you can get from that water you have available and that means doing some little investigation and a few sums.

Get hold of this book:-http://www.thesustainablevillage.com/servlet/display/product/detail/34163 Micro-Hydro Design Manual by Adam Harvey. Nigel Smiths book is also good but concentrates only on using "Pumps as Turbines" where as you need to know much more than that.

The only thing NOT in Adam Harveys book is Tesla Turbines but come back to me nearer the time to decide which method of turbine you would be thinking of using, first you got to figure out just how much "power" you have to play with.

It would appear that the two bits you have missing are a means of converting that water into "rotary" motion (Turbine)and then converting again that rotary motion into electric power (alternator) with some bits of electronic stuff that insures that the electric stays at the correct value that you need to be used (automatic Load Controller) ie 240v at 50Hz (or 60Hz in some countries)

Thanks

H

Hello Mario, Welcome to CR4.

If you can post a photo of what you have inside the hut then that would also be of great help!
