Aluminum Strength

09/15/2008 6:21 PM

If anyone can direct me to where I can get some info on vertical bearing strengths of aluminum pipe and tubing I would appreciate it. God Bless

This probably isn't the answer you wanted to hear - but you may be best off getting a hold of this book - Aluminum Design Manual

Thanks a bunch ! I hadn't been able to find anything other than tensile and grades.I have an idea what sizes I need for my project, but I want as much criteria met as I can get on my own.I'll have to hire someone to give me a stamp and the least amount of changes the less it'll cost me.Again thank you and God Bless !

If you can be a little more specific regarding "vertical bearing strength" I could post specific excerpts from my library of aluminum design. Are you looking at strength of columns, or bearing stresses on plates, or crush strength of pipes and tubes, or ...........

A picture/sketch would be helpful.

If you are planning on doing a lot of design with aluminum then the Aluminum Design Manual will help you immensely (It covers A LOT of design criteria)

But, as I mentioned, if you are only looking at a single/simple case I could post specific excerpts/pages to save you the money for that manual.

You need to be clear on the specification of aluminum and its temper designation you are looking for. There are wide range of aluminum pure and alloyed with temper designation ranging from O.T3,T4,T6 etc. There should be no problem at all of accessing the technical details from plenty of sources from the net. Good luck.

Sounds like you are designing columns. Don't forget that bearing strength goes well beyound material properties. There is bracing, anchorage, moment transfer, column length, etc. all of which have a profond impact on the amount of vertical load a column can support.

You need to know the property of the stuff you are using and you can calculate it yourself through direct engineering rules of strength of materials, donot forget to check for buckling.
