Operating Temperature for Torlon 5030

09/17/2008 3:15 AM

Looking for a machinable material with ESD characteristics which can operate between -60 to +100 degree Celcius. Does Torlon 5030 falls into such catogary? Any other materials (cheapest) that you can recommend.

Thanks.

Dear Guru,

Thanks for the article that you sent. I saw it before but it only states the upper end of the material's operating temperature. It does not state the lower end. Wandering if it can operate @-60 Degree C?

Regards.

Torlon may used from cryogenic to 275°C. There have been evaluations by national labs at temperatures as low as 4K without failure.

If you are looking for ESD characteristics, then Torlon 5030 would not be a good choice, unless you coat it with aluminum by vacuum metalizing. The surface resistivity is very high. Torlon 7130 has 30% graphite fibers, which should help shield against ESD. I was not able to locate information on surface resistivity for this grade. You could contact Solvay Advanced Polymers at 1-800-621-4557 or their web site at www.solvayadvancedpolymers.com to see if they can give you this information. For many other materials you could have them specially compounded for ESD by RTP, LNP, or other compounders. I doubt that they would touch Torlon, though, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
