Telemtry via Cell Phone

09/17/2008 7:44 PM

you all have seen the commercial, where someone gets an E-Mail from their car reminding them about a service visit or if there is something wrong..

I'm looking for something similar, I want to remotely monitor the charge level of a battery pack. And if the pack was to discharge from over use or even non-use and it gets to a "X" level of discharge it sends out say via a cell phone a message alerting me of the condition, or even e mails the message also.

Any suggestions?

What distance do you need to have the message travel? There are low voltage level sensors that could activate a remote transmitter>

Hi Bob,

Not very far from the sensor, that most likely can or will be hardwired.

This is for a small electric vehicle , more or less like a golf cart.,, but the batterys keep getting abused badly, so we want to make a remote alarm so to speak.

Napa, for one sells a low voltage sensor for cars. If this was to cause an audible alarm to go off, would that work?

It's a start,,

Thing is the rig may be too far away, or out in a remote site and no one would hear it,, hence the need of like a text message sent to a cell phone,, or the same idea but sent as an E Mail.

But this is a good start, the sensor itself may be a part of the prtoject, will have to monitor the level no matter what happens after the monitoring.

The use of cell phone, would allow the message to be sent from Alaska to Mexico. This would be overkill. Radio transmitters would be a much more practical way to go. Motorola is a big player in the portable radio field. They might be able to help. Think about hand held 2 way radios. Even these are too complex. What is needed is a remote controlled transmit only radio in each vehicle. There would be one or more receive only radios that would receive the message from the vehicles.

No, We will need country wide coverage,,and eventually world wide also so the RF link just won't cut it.

Instead of hooking the low voltage sensor to an audible alarm, connect it to an autodialer. It could dial any number programmed into it, and send a "numerical code" that you could interpret. Your Caller ID would show that "numerical code". Radio Shack - fairly inexpensive - functional. -Wade(newbie)

You could use a Siemens S7-200 PLC and a Siemens GSM modem. The PLC could monitor the volts/amps and send a text message via the GSM modem to any cell phone.

If you are interested in some prepackaged solutions take a look at these. I can get you to someone to help if they look interesting.

Autopageusa.com C-3 product

Guidepointsystems.com

More information about the battery system, use, and environment, may allow some of us to come up with some charge saving solutions as well.

Hi All,

I'll know more exactly tomorrow ( Monday the 22nd ) of exactly what they will be wanting. I know the Battery alerting is a major concern of theirs. So that for sure will be the first major thing to be monitored.

This in my old job I would have gone to a In house solution and even construction, but this new employer doesn't want to go that route. They will want more or less someone else to supply this product. So heres a possible business opportunity for any of you out there.

Take care
