Mysterious Plastic-Type Material

09/18/2008 10:41 AM

Hello, I have in my possession a plastic material that i need more of.It's approx 1/32 thick& black on one side, on the other side it has what appears to be a white fiberglass mesh with 1/10 th " squares. On top of this mesh is a clear plastic material. We are using this to eilminate friction between carbon steel (2"-14")piping and U bolts and the structure it is bolted to.This material is now 4" wide but i suspect it came/ got cut off a larger roll. It is pliable at 70 degrees.I beleive it would break continuity also but that is not the goal. Can anyone help?Mfg.,tele. ,contacts...

Thanks

You are looking for a "Laminated Rubber" product. There are quite a few variations but you should be able to narrow it down using the search function at Globalspec.com home page.

Super-strut, Kirndorf and other companies that manufacture mounting hardware for pipe also sell a variety of rubberized cushing materials so it may be a good use of your time to give them a call.

It may be that you have Teflon that has been etched on one side to hold an adhesive that is retaining the clear plastic. Or the plastic peels of to stick the teflon on.

You don't have to use the same stuff. A good friction reducer is UHMW PE. "Poor man's teflon". Ultra high molecular weight polyethelene. Check McMaster-Carr, or Grainger as first stops. You can mechanically band them around the pipe to hold in place.
