Hot link from "subscribed discussions" direct to new posts.

09/21/2008 8:09 AM

A question/suggestion directed to the users and editors of CR4.

I was wondering if it would be possible to provide a "hot link" from the "subscribed discussions" page directly to the answers that have been posted since we last marked the comments as "read".

From a personal viewpoint, having to use a relatively slow connection, there is significant time and electronic traffic and when a discussion runs into multiple sheets, the first full sheet has to download before you can then highlight the "new comments".

This will remove the need to download what we've already read and can move onto the new material.

Do the other users see this a a potentially useful concept? Would that feature be worth the effort? Who would want that feature?

To the editors, I really hope that such a feature is possible without being too much of a hassle.

Yup...my PC at work is painfully slow and this increases the chance of the boss walking in while I'm on CR4 when I'm looking at it while my software tests are running in the background .

I'll second (or third) that. Even better would be that, plus a tooltip with e.g. first few words of first new comment (similar to the tips when browsing CR4 site search results), or a list of the authors of the last few replies.

The tooltip text seems to be downloaded with the search results - (from a quick look at the source html) - I don't know how much this would add to download time on a slow link. Maybe it could be optional?

Think I'd better stop there - I can almost feel Moose turning pale ...

Don't we already have that? Or am I totally misreading your request?

Currently it takes you to the start of the thread, then you click on the 'new comments' whick takes a while on a slow system and a big thread to get you to the latest comments.

Just try getting to a new comment on Kris' mythical 'Bath' thread , or CN's 'idyllic Pictures thread'

Del's understood the intent of the request.

What I'm asking about is a hot link to skip the step of going to the start of the thread when starting from our subscribed discussions page.

The background presumption is that since we are already subscribed into the discussion we would already be familiar with the content of all the posts that we have marked as "read" and could readily skip those.

Yeah, but I get a list of "new comments since..." whatever date, and I click on them to go to each. Some are scattered amongst old comments as replies to them - the new comments aren't all in one place all the time. Or maybe my T1 line has me spoilt like a month-old boiled egg...

It depends on how you're set to display.

I'm set for cronological & sometimes have to search out the context of a comment.

I think mine's set up in chronomochuckle order too, and occasionally I have to backtrack to the post replied to if I don't remember the context of the reply, but I'm still not clear on what this hotlinks request is actually for. It can't be...

...can it?

Maybe we need to run an experimement?

Here's the link to the 'Bath' thread...

If you subscribe.... I will then post a new reply. You then time how long it takes you to navigate to it, when 'new post' is flagged.
We then test in the southern hemisphere with some magnets attached.

Or..whatever...

But I'm already subscribed to the "Bath" thread (Lord only knows why...) The magnets would only stick to the cast iron scrap metal still out back at Kris' and never make it to the antipodes. But let me go post a msg there now...

Maybe I see your problem...have you tried pouring coffe into your PC? That will slow it down ..or maybe install Vista to get the full benefit of a slow response.
If you would like a slow response press #1,
If you wish you hadn't asked press #2....

Nah, I pour the coffee into me. Tried it in the PC once, all it did was smoke up the place, so I took it that it prefers tea... (Finicky dang machine...)

I found that when I log in from e-mail, I used the "remember password" option and whenever I log in from the two computers that I've used that option, the e-mail automatically opens the site.

(That's direct from "outlook" into internet logged.)

Hope this helps.
