I've found a couple of very useful books which explain relay technology. They are published by: Verlag Moderne Industry AG & Co, (German publisher but books are in English with lots of good illustrations/pictures/diagrams) Titles are 'Relay Technology' and 'The Modern relay' These are A5 size hard-back books which explain in detail every type of electro-mechanical and solid state relay together with applications and recommendations for usage.

I got my copies free from the local Nais/Matsushita Automation Controls rep. in Livingston, Scotland, but you may find them on the web - try www.euro.de.mew.com as a starter.

Most relay manufactures have masses of information on their web sites but you will need a lot of patience to go through it all!
