4000A Aluminum Bus Bar

10/07/2008 1:09 PM

I need to make an Aluminum 125mm x 10mm busbar with current carrying capacity of 4000A which can work at 4400A. What is the spacing required between the conductors and what is the sequence of the conductors that will achieve this. The ambient temp is about 45degC and am assuming a rise of about 45degC above ambient.

More information is needed ...

  • Voltage?
  • Insulation system?
  • Weather exposed, weather proof, indoor?
  • Open-air/forced-air/enclosed cooling?
  • Sun exposure?
  • Frequency?
  • Need for Short circuit capacity?
  • Applicable industry standards that must be complied with?

Hope this answers to your queries.

  • Voltage = 433V
  • Insulation system = air insulated
  • Weather exposed, weather proof, indoor = indoor
  • Open-air/forced-air/enclosed cooling = air enclosed cooling (looking into option of air/forced cooling)
  • Sun exposure = none
  • Frequency = 50Hz
  • Need for Short circuit capacity = 50kA
  • Applicable industry standards that must be complied with = IS:8623

I am planning to have a setup with 125x10mm busbars in a spaced out arrangement with the distance between different phases at about 80mm. Each phase comprises of 4 runs in an arrangement where 2 runs are separated from other 2 runs by 80mm. My cross section is as follows:

R1 10mm R2 80mm R3 10mm R4 80mm B1 10mm B2 80mm B3 10mm B4 80mm Y1 10mm Y2 80mm Y3 10mm Y4 80mm N1 10mm N2.

It sure helps my queries, I deal with 15kV, 25kV and 35kV, outdoor, natural cooling, sun exposure, 12kA faults (typically), 60 Hz, NESC compliance.

We are a world appart.
