PVC Pipe Coating

10/08/2008 1:06 PM

Hello;

Regarding white PVC pipe. I have noticed that there is a shine to the surface. Is there any kind of coating applied to it that "seals" it? if I sand it down will it significantly degrade the life of the pipe or somehow cause it to become more porous? Maybe a colour stabilizer? Will it fade if in outdoor use? I am aware that the sanding of PVC can produce an irritant for the lungs and would take proper precautions.

I am in North America, if there is different PVC production standards regionally.

Thanks for any help on this.

PVC is extruded like the rest [PEs etc]. Feedstock goes into the auger, gets heated up, melts, gets squeezed through a die [or 2 or 3], extrudes, get's cooled down and chopped into 6 or so meter lengths.

It's shiny on the inside and outside as it is the same material throughout. They can change inside and outside colour, but the material is the same.

Yes, the fumes are not good for you, the chemicals leach [not good for you] and it is intolerant to UV protection so eventually cracks [not good for you].

You use glue [not good for you] and endless connectors because it is rigid as opposed to the flexability of Low or High Density Poly Ethelene [HDPE].

HDPE is more expensive per meter but less connectors because of the flexibility. So you have to do the maths.

PVC pipe shines because of the temperature applied at the surface. When you mix compound for production of pipe, you add your resin, TiO2 (colorant to make it white and because PVC resin once extruded its transparet), CaCO3 and other. The UV protection is added in this so the whole mix is protected. This means that when extruded all layers of the pipe is UV protected. When assembling PVC pipe through solvent joints, you have to sand it so the welding action is optimum. PVC is not resistent to UV rays, thus not a good idea to expose it to sunlight, unless the manufacturer used UV protection.
